Heidi... I had a mom with a retained placental fragment about 2 years ago.
It took her about 6 weeks from the time of the D&C, but I believe that this
was extended by the fact that her pede kept recommending the addition of
more formula. She wound up in my office 5 1/2 weeks into this saga, after
her baby had suffered diarrhea for a month, with no significant weight gain
-- which the physician attributed to her *breastmilk*. (Incredibly, he
wasn't at all concerned about the protracted diarrhea.) At that point she
was BFing 3-4 times a day. I recommended that the mom ditch the formula,
go to bed with the babe and breastfeed exclusively for 48 hours while
taking high doses of acidophilus to bring more lactobacilli into her milk.
It all worked. The diarrhea ceased within 12 hours, baby began to gain
weight more-or-less immediately, and did beautifully thereafter. I
suspect that with the right supports, she could have pulled this off in a
few days. I'd love to hear what other, less circuitous routes have turned
up...
