Nikki,

Interesting article. Another Leader and I were talking a few days ago
about the ad campaign and she pointed out something that I would like your
opinion on. She wondered how effective the campaign would be if these
mothers that want to breastfeed are still unable to get the help and
support that they need in their communities. We have a serious problem
with support in our area. I get calls every month from mothers that were
never helped in the hospital and then sent home with babies that are not
nursing well. These mothers are then told to rent a pump and suddenly we
have a mother breastmilk feeding and blaming herself that the
breastfeeding relationship is not working the way they thought it would.
We do have a pediatritian office nearby that employs three IBCLC's but
they give out very questionable information and when I take a different
approach they seem reluctant to question the info given by an LC when I
am "just a Leader". OK now I am rambling!

Anyway, I think that we will have many mothers left with guilt that should
not be placed on themselves. But, when a move was first made to stop
cigarette smoking in our country there were not very many options for
helping you break what I understand is a very powerful addition. Now that
our society has taken a very negative view of smoking there are numerous
aids to help you quit. (As I am typing this it is occuring to me the
these aids are produced by drug companies that also make formula) Do you
think that this campaign will lead to better information and support being
available or simply frustration and guilt on the backs of mothers that are
unable to find help? And what can we do in our communities to ensure that
these mothers are getting correct info and the support needed?

Thanks,

Tracy DeMaddalena
