In Australia we NEVER give eye drops/ eye ointment as any sort of
prophylaxis. IM Vitamin K is given whenever someone gets around to it - no
time limits stipulated. It is usually the responsibility of the birthing
suite midwife, so more often then not gets given prior to leaving birth
suite (within 2 to 3 hours).
I have read/heard of the Vit K inj being given to baby while he is actually
breastfeeding so as not to interfere with the uninterrupted skin-to-skin
time. Reportedly the baby doesn't even flinch, just keeps on suckling.
