Dear Lactnet,
Persistant green stools can be a symptom of malabsorption from pancreatic
insufficiency from undiagnosed cystic fibrosis....there are not always
respiratory problems and/or SWG or FTT...in fact, the dozens of cases of late
or missed diagnosis' I have seen always are a confounding array of symptoms
or BFing problems superimposed...it takes real detective work!
Obviously, I would not convey this to the mother...however, it a commonly
overlooked red flag....since you have considered one-sided nursing and
diet....it is worth consideration...my own daughter was diagnosed 8 yrs ago at
age 3....she gained nicely the first few months but was gassey and colicky
with some reflux...she has yet to have advanced lung problems, mainly
sinus...she had mildewed cloth diapers, green and sometimes bluish stools,
persistant cradle cap and a fishy smell to her head and neck and only gained 2
lbs. in 6 months once I gave her solids....
Green stools are always a heyday for LCs...but in this case I thought it
is important to remind everyone that pancreatic insufficiency can be gradual
and green stools can be a by-product, quite literally....please e-mail me
privately if I can provide more info..
