The difficult thing about expecting parents to be "accountable" for
being "informed" is who is informing them? Just about everything out
there has someone making a convincing argument for a particular way of
doing things. There is so much conflicting information.

The AAP says babies should be placed skin to skin at birth and not
removed until the first feeding has taken place, not even to weigh
them, and that you can wait up to 6 hours to give the vit K shot. But
how many parents will have read the policy statement and know they
should argue with the L&D nurse when she says she "has" to take the
baby for just a minute to weigh him, and he has to have a painful
procedure within the first hour of birth (vit K shot).

Accountability is for everyone, and we as HCP's know what the AAP
statement is, so why do we continue to employ routines that interrupt
this delicate period of time?
