I'm hoping you wise ones here at LactNet will have some insight on this
one. I've searched the archives with no success and wasn't able to find
any relevant information with a google search either.

A mother I'm working with has just found out that she's been exposed to
mold at work and is concerned about possible exposure. Here's her e-mail
to me (posted with permission):

"In January, my work office moved into a trailer (our building is getting
renovated). The trailer had been onsite since October. When we moved in
January, we noticed a very slight mildewy smell that got progressively
worse, especially in my office. I made an official complaint last week,
environmental health took my wall apart on Friday and found mold. They are
taking this very seriously, are moving all of us to other spaces (3 of the
4 double-wide trailers have mold, about 50 of us have to move and of
course they don't have any space or they wouldn't have rented the trailers
in the first place, but that is another story ) beginning on Monday. They
are allowing us back into our offices to pick up things but not to work in
there. Okay, here is the question for you:

I've been pumping 3x's a day (until 2 weeks ago, now just 2x's) as J is 15
months and still a tiny peanut. Is there any concern that the mold has
gotten into the breastmilk, either through my pumping or through me
inhaling it? I'm only in the office 3 days a week and 2 of those days I
spend 4 hours teaching in another building."

I'd be grateful for any information or suggestions, I don't know where to
begin on this one. My gut feeling is that breastmilk would still be far
superior to any alternative, but I have no way to gauge any possible
exposure or risk to the baby (or the mother for that matter). The mother
is in the San Francisco Bay Area, if that makes a difference.

Thank you in advance.
