Mellanie--has this baby been seen by a pediatric gastroenterologist?  It
sounds from your description that at least a large part of his difficulties
stem from untreated GERD, and there are surgical procedures that may be
able to help this child if an appropriate diagnosis were made.  Unless
there's a typo in your post, it does not sound as though his weight is
within normal limits.  By the CDC charts he started out at about the 50th
percentile and he is now well below the 3rd percentile--I think that would
meet anybody's criteria for failure to thrive.

I am not sure if he has been seen by a pediatric gastroenterologist since
his first week.  I will ask the mom when I talk to her tomorrow.

As for his weight, I did not look at the charts.  What I calulated was that
he has gained, on average 3.99oz per week since his low point at 7lbs3oz.
I guess I wasn't too concerned about the weight because her pediatrician was
not.  also, the mom is very petite and was also a very small baby.  Maybe we
should be more concerned.  It may be that in identifying the source of the
problem his weight gain may increase.  However, maybe if she pursues this
angle someone will take her seriously.  No one that she has seen, with the
exception of the lactation support community sees his behavior as a problem.
