When and where breastfeeding support takes place depends mostly on the
availability of the counselors and the availability of a venue. Many
counselors have young children and may be constricted by education
schedules or naps or whatever. Some are working outside, or inside, the
home and are limited by that. they may be heavily involved in other
volunteer initiatives. Different venues, whether offered for free or for a
fee, are often only available at certain times. One of the advantages of
having a variety of organizations offering support is that moms can usually
find something that is at a time and a place that is convenient for them.
And for those that want weekly gatherings, they may be able to find them by
taking advantage of all of the opportunities available.

I think that it is very important for hospitals and IBCLCs to find out
which organizations are operating in their community so that they can refer
moms to these groups to provide ongoing information and mtm support. Of
course, they need to get to know the community counselors so that they are
comfortable referring, and vice versa. I would love to see a breastfeeding
network in each community where everyone can come together on a regular,
even if infrequent, basis to get to know one another, share concerns and
plan strategies to meet the needs of all women in that community. I think
that is what is at the heart of the government initiatives, that there is a
role for everyone and everyone needs to work together.
