I recently started volunteering again at a group home for teen moms. I
haven't been involved with them since I was a LLL Leader several years ago.
The main focus of this particular situation was birth (they have a labor
coach program) but breastfeeding was discussed quite a bit during the session.
Since it's been so long, I seem to no longer have any of my old resources on
dealing with teens and breastfeeding, so I had to go on my gut feelings about
some of the things that were said. I feel the need to counsel one of the
volunteers about how to deal with these young girls because she was coming on
WAY too strong, in my opinion. I need some ideas on where to find some good
information to share with her.
I just feel that sharing how HER 10+ pound baby nursed day and night for two
months will only serve to frighten these girls who do NOT have supportive
husbands/families to get them through tough times, but having some references
on which things work best when counseling the teens on breastfeeding will be
preferable to "it's my opinion that this is not a good approach to take."
Please email any responses.
Thank you.

Cyndi
