Kramer was sabotaged - .

regarding the recording of  Michael Kramer and Prof Mary Renfrew  on BBC Radio 4's Woman's Hour on 23rd July - please be aware that the interview was pre-recorded and the content was edited, and some important comments were not included. Michael Kramer made it clear that he was not only taken out of context but actually misquoted.  Mary Renfrew made the point that the argument was not 'breast is better', but 'formula is worse', but that was not included in the final interview as broadcast.  She has written to Woman's Hour to follow up.

(at the end of this post)

The whole interview can be heard on the BBC website

It should be available for a few more days.  Kramer clarified some of his statements to the media and how some of his remarks have been taken out of context and sensationalised.
key section:   When  asked about the quote in the Times:  "Is it true that you said there  is very little evidence that breastfeeding reduces the risk of leukaemia, lymphoma, bowel disease, type 1 diabetes, heart disease and [high]  blood pressure."
He answered:  "Not at all - what I said was for  those outcomes the number of studies and the quality of those studies  is limited and we need additional evidence but most of the evidence suggests that breastfeeding is protective against those outcomes and that's what I told the journalist.
His main point seems to be that there some people are  using out of date references for Asthma and Allergy prevention.

press release:
Canadian Institutes of Health Research (CIHR) experts explore the issues surrounding the practice of breastfeeding
ATTENTION: Assignment editors, health, research and science reporters

For immediate release -

2009-27
OTTAWA (July 27, 2009) - When it comes to the health of a child, every decision a parent makes - before and after birth - can have long-term implications. Studies have shown that breastfeeding can boost a child's immune system, reduce the risk of infection, and, as CIHR's IHDCYH Scientific Director, Dr. Michael Kramer, and his team discovered, exclusive and prolonged breastfeeding can even make children smarter! While many studies have substantiated the benefits of breastfeeding, this topic remains highly debated within the health-care community.
August 1-7 is World Breastfeeding Week and several CIHR-funded researchers are studying the different aspects of breastfeeding to determine how to promote the health of both mother and child.
Experts:
Lactation and medication: A potentially toxic combination
Dr. Shinya Ito, CIHR-funded researcher from the Hospital for Sick Children (Toronto)
Vitamin D in pregnancy and breastfeeding - how much is enough for a healthy mother and child?
Dr. Tim Green, CIHR-funded researcher from the University of British Columbia (Vancouver)
Different mothers, different practices - Is there a "right" way to breastfeed?
Dr. Aimee Webb, CIHR-funded researcher from the University of Toronto (Toronto)
Can breastfeeding now improve your child's health later?
Dr. Michael Kramer, Scientific Director of CIHR's Institute of Human Development, Child and Youth Health (Montreal)
