And I think we need SUPERVISED clinical hours to qualify. "

Last night, for some reason, I also remembered that as a PT student, the
college I attended (they are sometimes different, admittedly) did not allow
us to graduate unless we had completed at least 4 rotations, each between 4
and 8 weeks long, in different clinical settings. During that time, we were
directly supervised, assigned our own patients we were to work with, and
every note that we wrote had to be read through and co-signed by a PT. We
would sign SPT ( student PT). When I was a PT at Harlem Hospital ( Go Harlem,
you Baby-Friendly hospital!), and supervising several students in a
program I set up, I also realized that the students from certain colleges seemed
much more ready to take their exam ( with its practical component) and work
as PTs, than students at other programs, and the main difference seemed to
be how much the school emphasized and gave opportunities for clinical work
and supervision. The schools which emphasized theory and research-writing
sent me students that had SO much more work to do to actually get ready to
be in a therapeutic relationship with a person in need. ( They would have
made good avatars of information, though :).....) So I have to second Jane's
idea. I do feel that as a LLLLeader with other experienced Leaders, I was
" co-supervised" during the 7 years before I sat for the exam ( the minimum
at the time was 5 years, now I see it is 2). I have also seen that the
Leaders I have mentored into Leadership have such a deeper and wider knowledge
base than I had when I became a Leader, and then later an IBCLC. The
Leaders I mentored to Leadership who then sat for the exam were well-prepared.
Just some random thoughts on a Tuesday evening in Brooklyn...

Peace,
