Kris,
There are several options. First, you are very right to realize that you are
getting only what the mom is telling you that the dr. said. Believe me
mothers will interpret things incorrectly, tell you only what they want you
to know, or seek other opinions until someone tells them what they want.
This may sound cynical but it does happen. Since the mom did not call you
back as she said she would, that may mean that she did not want to go the
route you suggested, or couldn't for some reason. You could just let it go.
You could call mom back and talk to her about milk supply issues and latch
problems re the formula/bottles. You could offer another consult. Then it is
up to mom to f/u or not.
You could call the ped up and ask him about his recommendation, saying
something like "Hi Dr. X. I am Ms. Y the Lc working w/ Mrs. Z. Before I f/u
with her again I wondered if you could share a little about your discussion
w/ her. Mrs. Z had indicated a strong commitment to bf exclusively for at
least 4 mos, so I was surprised that she had changed her mind. And I also
wondered if you discussed with her how this would lead to a fall in her milk
supply, usually very quickly. I can recommend a very good latching technique
and some top quality pumps. What is your impression of how receptive she
would be to this?" Well, something like that. In my reports, I always try to
include mom's bf goals. So the doctor can see that the client wants to bf x
1 yr or whatever. I'll also say that the husband accompanied her and is
supportive of her.
I provide education to the docs whenever I can, especially in my reports and
when I have a chance to call or talk to them, but mostly I feel my
advice/info is for the mom. She has to make the decision about what to do
and how far to take it. She knows how to find me.
