A mother in Maui, Hawaii, is having problems with a 2 week old first
baby (C-section birth)and needs help with extremely sore nipples.
Birth weight was 7 lbs 2 ounces, weight today is 7 lbs 1 ounce, after
a low of 6 lbs 6 ounces.. Mother reports a good milk supply, is
leaking lots of milk, and says baby has been voiding and stooling
well. Baby was given a bottle today, and took over an hour to drink
just one ounce. Local doula/LLLL has been trying to help, but
problems are not getting better and mother is getting very
discouraged. Latch is only rarely comfortable. Baby is reported to
have a "swollen salivary gland" and an appointment with an ENT for
this is to be sought. Mother has a borrowed breast pump.

I have sent email web site resources on latch techniques, thrush,
tongue tie, and how to manage basic protocols (Feed the baby, protect
the milk supply, get the baby back to the breast when able, skin-to-
skin).

The ILCA web site lists IBCLCs in Hawaii, but not on Maui. I did send
those names to her.

Does anyone know of other local resources? I think this mother
should be seen by someone knowledgeable. You can email me off the
list with any suggestions..
