I went to see my client today (Baby with diaphragm problem, mom with large soft breasts, baby not latching, tongue at roof of mouth, etc). I went with another LC who has seen this mom with me before. We had mom lie in the bed, on her side with the baby kneeling and "hugging" mom and nursing from the upper breast. We tucked a little towel beneath baby to keep her at just the right height for the upper breast. This put the baby in proper flexion to keep her chest open to allow expansion of her diaphragm. She nursed beautifully and then she and her mom got the baby on themselves. Hopefully, she will continue with the PT and be nursing w/o such gymnastics soon. One more interesting note--this baby responds very well (becomes calm and becomes organized) when she is lifted up and down while held under her arms. I did this for a bit before mom attempted nursing and she said that her mother (grandma) does this w/ the baby a lot. Again, thanks to Lactnet for the support.
