Not sure if it's a scientific fact but after 25 years working with babies
I have pretty routinely seen lots of barfy babies within the first 24-48
hours of life. I've nicknamed the condition as the " poop and spew".
Seems like as the new baby begins to experence active peristalisis and
begins to pass meconium, they tend to become very gaggy/barfy. Within an
hour generally, the babe then passes meconium. To me its kind of like a
postop patient. The gut doesn't always wake up all four quadrents at the
same time( like the c-section moms who may pass gas but gets distended and
starts vomiting until the uppper quad starts to move)
For the babe, it looks like the extra pressure to start moving meconium
causes that still floppy esophagus to permit some spewing until the
gastric pressure is lessened. Like I said, not sure if there's the
science to back this observation up but the parents think I'm a magician
when the meconium appears within the next hour and the babe lessens it's
spewing within 48 hours. :)
Lisa
