A mother has been diagnosed with hyperthyroidism. (She was previously
hypothyroid and being treated with synthroid. Off the synthroid for a couple of
years now.) She has a six month old baby and has been exclusively breastfeeding.
Her immediate concern is: Is she harming her baby by breastfeeding with
untreated hyperthyroidism by having the higher levels of T3 and T4 are those
levels entering her milk and harming her baby? Her doctor is delaying the iodine
uptake testing hoping for this to be related to postpartum hyperthyroidism,
but has told her for the test she will need to wean and to be treated with
medication she will need to wean. As she is balancing her choices she wants to
know if the harm to her baby is already there by breastfeeding.

I have searched the archives, no answer. I have found much research on the
condition and disease and the treatment in relation to breastfeeding, but only
information assuming there is treatment. If you have the answer, could you
also point me in the direction of the research to share? And permission to
share your answer with the mother.

Thank you very much,
Pam MazzellaDiBosco, IBCLC
