Ruth,
If she has the choice, encourage her to have a natural childbirth, no
epidural or the like, can she take nourishment herself and not have IV's? Or
if needed or desired, have a heparin lock or saline lock placed in case
emergency meds or blood is needed. This will help the baby's part of the bf
dance, having an alert baby who can root and attach to the breast. It will
also help the mommy anatomy, not contributing to the nipple-areolar edema
recently discussed by Jean Cotterman.
Teach mom RPS and (while I realize this is a device many consider
unnecessary) consider the use of a product similar to the nipple everter, I
have heard moms say it really works. (She asked for suggestions ya'll!).
