Hello,
In pondering a post from a month or so ago about why adults health problems
are not related to nonbreastfeeding as infants, I have been wondering lately
what would happen if a question regarding how a person was fed as an infant on
the hx forms that you fill out with your doctor visits/hospital admission was
included on the form somewhere.
I can think of two possible outcomes. First of all, people would become more
aware of how they were fed and perhaps that some of the medical conditions
that they are experiencing could be related to this information. I have found
that this question has come up in some discussions that I have had with people
and I am always surprised to see how many people don't know how they were fed
in infancy. (in my experience, middle aged men seem to be the most ignorant
about this, sometimes the thought about knowing seems so foreign to them, and
sometimes they don't want to even ask their mothers-- because they are too
embarrassed).
Secondly, it would give researchers a wealth of accessible information
(albeit, with a certain percentage on inaccuracy) to base research into the effects
of breastmilk substitutes on health outcomes in later life.
There must be "powers that be" who oversee the necessary information that
come on these forms. Wouldn't it be fun to even start with one clinic, or one
hospital and see what this information would yield.
Tschuess,
Merilee
