Susan and Gonneke and all:

Gonneke always raises points that get my brain working. So, I've been
contemplating the
statement "The baby is more efficient than the pump". We've all quoted it,
even those of us who
have found that the pump can often be more "efficient" at removing milk.

Jumping in late, but one thing we can do, can say is that what baby's do,
when their capabilities and skills are in place, is say they are much more
"sophisticated" as well as "subtle" in their ability to get themselves nurtured.
I like using those words because I hope they remind or refocus the mom on how
amazing babies are, and should be, and how their signals are true but need
reading. Pumps may be efficient, but they do one thing, remove some milk -
this is a good thingwhen baby can't, but it is not near what happens when a
baby is nursing well, or even not so well - a whole array of good things happen
between the baby and the mom. The nursing dyad is quite amazing in a way
machines can never be.

Peace,
