Pamela and all,

I haven't found that crying during a consultation indicates that a mother
will discontinue breastfeeding. In fact, I find that many of the mothers I
see do cry. I have always felt that this helped them to relax and release
the feelings and emotions which were so strong at the time and to open up to
me and to the situation. I always spend some time just talking and getting
to know them, and encouraging them to feel comfortable and safe with me.
Many mothers are just a couple of days postpartum and are in the 'weepy'
stage anyway.

I'm very comfortable with their tears and I encourage them in fact!!

I'm glad to say that the mothers I've worked with who cried were still able
to have enough resolve to overcome their problems and continue
breastfeeding!!

It's an interesting theory - anyone else have ideas??

Janaki
