When we recently completely rewrote the breastfeeding portion of our
patient binder (notebook with all the info we give mew moms) we were
careful NOT to give a lot of "rules". Basically we pointed out
that it takes about 500 extra calories a day, baby gets "first
choice" and mom gets what's left. Eating a reasonably well balanced
diet is more for mom's sake than baby's. No "magic" foods to make
milk and no foods every nursing mother should avoid, etc. etc.
Then the new binder came out---what we wrote was in there, but there
was also a section on nutrition that wasn't written by the LCs which
proceded to give "rules" for a nursing mother's diet including all
the foods she shoud be careful of because they might affect the
baby! Arrgh!
We were able to get that section changed to agree with the
breastfeeding portion in future printings. Goes to show you just
when you think you have the bases covered, someone sneaks in behind
you. (Am I being influenced by the fact that it's opening day of
teh baseball season?)
