I would say it's because comfort is a byproduct of the need to be fed for the infant while feeding is a byproduct of the need for comfort in the child.

That is interesting. I wonder why some infants won’t bf on a breast with poor production, but many toddlers and older nurslings will. Many moms report their older one nursed on a “dry” breast for some time. I know my daughter did, and she weaned between 5 or 6, and there was really no milk probably the last year or more.
