To all those concerned about the Baby Friendly Designation:

There has been a great deal of confusion about the designation of "Baby
Friendly" in the United States. Currently there is only one Baby Friendly
hospital. That hospital is Evergreen in Washington. There are, however,
many hospitals with Certificates of Intent.

If your hospital or birthing center has received the Certificate of Intent,
it does not mean you are "Baby Friendly." Hospitals should have received a
letter from Hugh Downs, Chair of the U.S. Committee for UNICEF asking
explicitly that hospitals not use the term "Baby Friendly" if they have a
Certificate of Intent. The letter states:

"We would like to remind you the Certificates of Intent are not the same as
actual Baby-Friendly recognition, but rather an interim step that is being
offered in preparation of the Baby-Friendly review and recognition which
should be available in 1996. If you intend to publicize the receipt of the
Certificate and your participation in the Interim effort, we ask that you be
careful not to imply that your hospital has been designated as 'Baby
Friendly.'"
