I am a hospital RN/IBCLC. There are three of us in our Lactation Program. We are all RN/IBCLC. 2 of us work 3
12 hour shifts, 2 days a week as LC, 1 day a week as staff. When we started our program in 1996 we were not
given a raise from our RN wage, but we were given the benefit of working straight days (the rest of our staff rotates
days/noc). We have received all the raises the other RN's have. We follow the RN job description, with an
addendum for Lactation Consultant. Our manager did this because she was afraid that if we were seen as a
seperate entity, that might leave us open for budget cuts. This way, we are factored into the hours for patient
care budget she has to follow.
I admit that I do feel that we furthered our education and expertise as well as our responsiblities when we became
lactation consultants. However, this is not an issue I have pursued because I feel I am paid pretty well as it is.
