Hi All,
OK, here is a stumper. Mom has 18 mo old who has 4 crowns (stainless steel
with porceline fronts) on his top four front teeth. He has had them for
about 5 months. Mom recently (within last 6 wks) developed what she thought
was either a yeast or an excema rash on her nipples. The rash is red, a bit
flaky, no itching or burning, and is a half moon shape at the base of each
nipple that starts (on the right nipple) at 1 o'clock, peaks at 11o'clock
and ends about 9 o'clock (using a clock face as a reference), and is the
same on the left breast only it starts at 11 and ends at 3 peaking at 1.
Mom has tried nystatin alone, hydrocortizone alone, GV alone, with no real
results. Tried 1 part each of nystatin, hydrocortizone and triple
antibiotic ointment, with decent results, but when she stopped (read...ran
out) the rash came back.

What she want to know is could this be an allergy (long time in developing)
to the stainless steel in the crowns on her babys teeth? Some metal
allergies do run in the family, but she has not had a problem that she can
remember. Also the rash is only in this one spot on both breasts. It does
not affect the nipples themselves, just at the base on the areola.

Baby is asymptomatic for yeast himself. He did have a yeasty bottom about
2 months ago, but that was resolved with a combo of nystatin and GV within a
couple of weeks. His rash was gone just before this rash started on mom.

Any ideas or suggestions will be appreciated. BTW, mom has no intentions of
weaning for any reason. Oh, and she also makes sure his mouth is rinsed
with a sip or 4 of water after he has eaten solid food when he wants to
nurse. So she feels that food contact is not the problem.

TIA!
