Remember the "honeymoon is over" - well, this is the rest of the story...

Thanks to all your input I wrote a letter in which I explained the
reasoninig behind our cue feeding (both to start the feeds and to stop
them) and kangaroo care, and included information from Peter Hartmann's
studies. I also cc'd her boss as some of you suggested.

However, the reason I am writing is to let you know what happened next -
though you all would have been able to predict it:

Tuesday PHN visit - baby was on 2-3 hour schedule, lost weight, mom has
given formula x 3 nights as baby kept crying after her allotted 20 minutes
of breastfeeding and mom could not handle it. Also, mom had a lump at 10
o'clock in her right areolar line - just about where the visiting RN had
told her to "press so the baby can breathe". Baby was latching on with
nipple shield when very frustrated and angry, but would latch on to breast
when less upset.

PHN reiterated the need to NOT schedule, NOT limit, feeds, use breast
massage and warm compresses on lump. Today - weight up, mom smiling, baby
latching on without nipple shield most of the time, EXCELLENT stool while
we were there - but the lump is still not resolved. Very hard and
pea-sized. She is seeing MD for her c/s check today, and will show him the
lump. I do believe it will resolve with another day of correct
positioning, no finger on the breast (I taught her today how to wrap baby
around herself which freed the nose very easily), warm compresses and
massage, but MD should be aware of it in case of it not resolving soon.
Mom is still on LOTS of antibiotics for uterine, vaginal and urinary
infections, so she may not develop symptoms of mastitis when she would have
otherwise.

THANKS for all your support and help!
