A good friend of mine is expecting her second baby this summer, she had
the worst of all birth horror stories I've heard with her first, which led
to her being unable to breastfeed successfully. She is looking for every
opportunity to avoid all the problems, but especially those breastfeeding
related. She bottlefed her first and has already made the comment "If it
doesn't work out, I know my baby will be fine with formula", so I want to
assist in every way possible so that it can *work out*. I told her I would
try to help her by coming up with a list of questions she can ask any
prospective LC's. She will be interviewing a doula/LC soon, and plans to
try and meet more. Can any of you point me to a list of questions to ask
to find one that will provide her with superior support? So far I've
thought of these, anyone care to add or correct?

Is the LC licensed? (is there more than one license to be had?) How long ago?
How often does she see clients in person? How long does she spend on
average with the in person visits?
Does she see clients in office, in home, or in hospital, some combination?
Are there different fees for different locations.
When is she available for consultation over the phone, or in person? Can
she be reached at other times in case of emergency (physician's order to
wean, etc.)? Does she have a partner in times of vacation or illness?
How does she keep current with breastfeeding information?
What sorts of tools (wrong word?) does she recommend on a regular basis?

What am I not thinking of,forgetting?

Please respond privately as well as to the list, I am slow in keeping up
with this wonderful list! Thank You!
