Jan DeCoopman has a neat little "apgar" for mom to rate early BF sessions.
I've been bugging her to write it up.  The nurse's eval of bf session is
helpful, but we all know she won't go home with mom!   I think the mom eval
is empowering!

Each item gets 1 point

Baby awake
Rooting
Enough areola
Active sucking
Swallowing
Time - 10 to 40 min of sucking
Satisfaction - baby settles down

Score of 5, 6 or 7 - probably doing OK
Score 3 or 4 - ask for help if not better score at next feeding
0-2 - ask for help NOW

These could be printed up on 3 x 5 cards, given to mom at prenatal bf
classes, or during labor, or shortly after delivery at first feeding.  Then
nurses would remind mom to "score" the feeding.  Card could be propped in
baby cribs, hang on wall in pt rooms, etc.
