Why do we have to say it doesn't work? I have seen it work. I have taken a cranky tired newborn from his or her parents arms and wrapped the baby in a blanket and rocked and whispered or hummed or shushed ithe infant to sleep. Many parents have no idea that their babies need rocking or the sound of a human voice or being held, comforted wrapped etc. Why do we have to say that these techniques don't work based on comparing them to a video showing parenting advice? What was in the other video? Maybe both sets of advice worked and the babies would have been fussier without any advice at all. Where is the control group of dyads where the parents got NO advice? Might not it be that both videos worked or didn't work for some babies. Certainly rocking and swaddling a hungry, gassy, or refluxy baby is not necessarily going to do the trick. But it certainly WILL work for some babies. Why do we have to soothe all babies the same way. Why can't we say that we have to try and let the baby tell us what works and different techniques will work in different situations depending on the problem and the specific baby. Car seats are the ultimate kid soother for some little ones and they make others puke...can we say that they don't work if we happen to pick a few kids who puke in them...no all we can say is that many children find car seats soothing....some don't...
