I have a 30 Y.O. Mom that is G1P1 and is an insulin dependent diabetic
She noticed little or no breast change during pregnancy. In 96 she had
surgery on the left breast @ 6:00 at areolar line, incision of 1.5cm to
remove benign lump. Baby born C-Section for FTP. Birth wgt was 9lb
12oz. Day 3, discharge wgt was 9lb 4oz. Day 4, wgt was 8lb 14oz, had 5
scant wets and 4 green-black tarry stools. Suck-swallow was 3:1 to 9:1
with frequent flutter sucking, negative nursing w/cheek dimple and poor
jaw excursion, bubble palate(disorganized suck), frenulum normal.
Cup-fed 15cc supplement every other feed after 20 and 20 bf q2 hours.
Day 5, wgt 9lb 0oz, 6 wets and 2 stools(brownish), suck slightly
improved. Right breast, suck-swallow 3:1 for 7 minutes, then 5:1. Left
breast suck-swallow 9:1 then baby sleeps after 4-5 min.
Post feed wgt 1/2 Oz. Post feed pumping yields 15ml from right breast
and 0 from left breast. Pre-feed pumping left side yields 0ml, right
side yields 0.5 to 1.0 oz. I can manually express milk from left breast
and palpate full ducts on top of the breast but baby or pump cannot
remove milk from breast. Am I fighting a losing battle on the left side?
any ideas?
Thanks
Sara Macy, RN IBLC
