What I always tell moms interested in becoming an LLL Leader is that it is
just about all "GIVE". It is all giving to others, of the Leader's time, her
energy and her empathy. One has to want to give back to LLL or leadership
becomes draining rather than inspiring.

People think LLL leadership is the easy way to become an IBCLC because one
has mothers calling for BF help and thus one can accrue BF consultancy hours
under supervision more easily. The reality is that leadership is a lot of
time and effort for no pay, and constant giving to others.

People that only want to become Leaders to become IBCLC tend not to last
through the initial training, which is usually a year or more depending on
how fast one works at it.

And I think the UCLA program in lactation consulting is a good model but the
problem is that it is just one program and most people probably can't afford
to up and move away from their families for the training. Wish we had these
in every state.

Kathy Eng, BSW, IBCLC (LLL Leader)
