Bear with me as I try to divulge all the important details. If I forget
something, I probably have it right in front of me.

This is her second baby - first baby was not breastfed due to latch
difficulties but Mom pumped for 4 months with a supply I would consider
low-normal. During her recent pregnancy, she claims to have experienced
significant breast growth and colostrum during last month of pregnancy.
However a recent manual exam of breasts show low glandular growth. Baby
is 2 weeks old, mom has close to zero milk supply, never experienced
engorgement although she claims "some heaviness", particularly on one
side. Mom has Hashimoto's that is under control with medication. Mom
has pumped with a hospital grade pump every 2 hours and put the baby to
breast whenever she fusses (very often) where she will nurse for comfort
but exhibits very infrequent swallow. She is on day two of Reglan (and
has done all the other typical supply increasing suggestions - tea,
fenugreek tabs, etc) with little noticeable change in supply, so far.
Baby is being fed with formula, exclusively after a failure to thrive
diagnosis was made on day 6 (25% !! Weight loss in baby).

Blood tests came in today showing her thyroid levels normal and her
prolactin levels at 19. Her doctors are saying that it would be a
compromise to her other bodily systems to mess with her pituitary levels
enough to affect prolactin. They are also suggesting the Reglan will
likely not work because her pituitary will "squash" any minor increase
in prolactin the drug might create? I hope this makes some sense - I
have not spoken with the doctor myself but apparently the endo, OB/Gyn
and her Fertility specialist all agree that she will be unable to
produce milk and should consider it a lost cause.

I am writing in the hopes that you wise men and women might have some
medical knowledge that certainly I, and apparently Mom's doctors, do not
have.

Thank you -

Nicki Bradley
