I had a first hand experience with these issues.
My daughter was very fussy the first couple months of life. She had
audible rumbly gut noises at each feed followed by copious mucousy stools.
Around 2 months of age blood was in the stools. Our pediatrician
recommended avoiding all (ALL TRACES) of milk products. It can take up to
THREE WEEKS of avoidance to heal the gut. My daughter did much better
until I replaced cow's milk with soy milk in my diet. She started having
the problem again but worse! Our pedi advised me that most kids with this
issue are also sensitive to soy protein. The medical name for this is
food protein-induced enterocolitis syndrome (FPIES), it is a severe, cell-
mediated gastrointestinal food hypersensitivity typically provoked by
cow’s milk or soy. In this case the only exposure was through my
breastmilk.

I went on to breastfeed my daughter for 2.5 yrs and avoided all milk and
soy protein. If i accidently ate some the symptoms returned. I
supplemented her with Neocate when needed. Around age three we challenged
her with milk and she did just fine. From what i could find it seems
most kids with this type of problem outgrow the sensitivities by age two.

The challenge for moms is the total avoidance to cow and soy protein. The
proteins are listed in various ways on food labels. FAAN is an excellent
source for info on allergen avoidance for dedicated moms!

Hope this helps.
