I just sent a private post to Pam. However, after I sent it, I realized
that perhaps the group would like to know the info I shared. In Oct. 98
I was contacted by a mom w/4 week old with sore nipples who is pierced
in both. I went to visit, the hospital had her giving bottles, using a
nipple shield and gave her a cream (not one I ever recommend). I got rid
of the extra stuff, got her latching on and positioning right and using
a better sore nipple treatment. In searching I'd found about it was
about 50-50 on leaving the jewelry in or taking it out. She was only
able to take her ring out of the one, but not the barbell out of the
other. So she went ahead and nursed. He is now 5 months old, still
nursing, no problems. He has not swallowed any jewelry (I did post to
Pam that it would probably just go through him, my daughter ate her
earings when she found out she could take them out of her ears) and has
not injured his mouth.
  Does anyone know of any literature on the subject? I was very angry
with our hospital as they looked at her (she has multiple piercings) and
they just told her that it was not possible to nurse. She kept going,
because a pamphlet given to her by the place that did it, said it was
possible. I'm also sad that it took 4 weeks for her to be in contact
with me - the hospital is no longer calling me while the moms are still
there. Oh well, at least in this case, I was able to help.
