I am curious what we mean when we say "hospital grade pump"? I have looked in all of the prominent books and asked many many lactation professionals for a definition of a hospital grade pump. Is it the cycles, the vacuum, the ability to be used from mother to mother, or the fact that it is "in the hospital"? I have been told by a very knowledgeable and prominent lactation consultant that there really is no definition. Am I missing something somewhere? Medela says their PIS Advance is "hospital grade" (at least they do in this area) and now Playtex says the Embrace is "hospital grade". How do we respond to this? Who defines the pumps? Seems we need to have a standard that we use so that we are all talking about the same thing.
