I'd like to thank those of you who gave me valuable "food for thought" and
wrote in reply to my post about the above subject. It is always so amazing
how even when advice is touching on the same idea/solution, there's a
variation of it from each of you.

To update you, since I posted, we discussed mer/low supply and measures of
solving, however, mom's dr. told her he is not familiar with oxytocin
intranasal spray and therefore would never presc. it, and in his experience,
with milk supply issues, Reglan has not been beneficial. (You may fill in
what you could probably guess what I was thinking! Grrrrr.) We discussed
second opinion; mom not too keen on "hurting dr.'s feelings", however, I
gave her the name of Pam K. whom some of you I'm sure know who is IBCLC in
the area and CNM. I'm fortunate to have her close by, drs often "hear" her,
and that's a plus for me as time goes by. I don't say, "gee, why doesn't dr.
take my word?" I just feel he/she will, in good time with Pam's support and
knowledge. I'm the "new kid".

The mom spoke with Pam, Pam spoke with dr. and dr. prescribed Reglan. Mom
stated she is leaking now when she hears baby crying and baby is also
beginning to have times when she stays on the breast, suckles well and is
satisfied afterward. We discussed using an sns, but she is not interested
in using it at this time. She is doing some skin to skin, however, I'm not
sure just how much. In the past few days, she has been gone without baby to
a mother/daughter banquet and was gone for 6 hours and out for a "date" with
dad for several hours. She is one who really needs her sleep and has dad
give bottles through the night. I hope I'm not sounding judgemental
here, I don't walk in her shoes, but...(does the internet pass on
one's feelings of frustration??????)

Anyway, I've discussed all that's been suggested to me with this mom and she
is aware of the cause/effect of the way she manages things during this what
I term "critical period". I learned mom is happy to supply whatever milk is
there at this point and whatever may come with the use of reglan and pumping
and to supplement with abm.

Thanks to all of you again. You are a God send! And thanks to Pam K for
telling me about Lactnet. Only my house is a wreck because I'm afraid I'll
miss something here if I go off for anytime!!!

WarmLLLy,
Mary Coutts, LLLL, IBCLC
