I spent a frustrating time on the phone today explaining to a marketing
person why I didn't agree with having formula in new baby packs (given as a
reward for placing two birth announcements in the newspaper). As we talked
I realised that she did not understand the difference between stating
something that is true and stating something as truth because it is
generally accepted. I objected to several things in the company's
breastfeeding "information" sheet because they were false (most women need
to supplement, babies should be breastfed for six months, and more - she
read me the exact wording over the phone). She said these things were not
wrong because she found in her research that this is what most people did
or thought. This is not just a lack of breastfeeding info, but a lack of -
what? - ethics and logical thought I suppose.

Like I say to my five-year-old, "Just because you want it to be true, does
not mean it is true."
