Hi All,

I've committed a faux pas and neglected to post an intro. I'm the proud mom
of an eight-year-old son and four-year-old daughter, both breastfed years
longer than I ever dreamed I would. My ds lived to nurse and my dd only
nursed to live. Since there have been recent posts on the topic of weight,
I have to mention my ds was only 27# at 2.5 yrs and my dd, born 6#, was
over 40# before she turned two. A third-world country could have thrived on
one of her thighs! At that point she just started growing into her weight,
getting taller, so she went about 18 months without gaining weight. Most of
the time it's the scrawny babies that attract the concern of hcp's so I
enjoyed the vacation from scrutiny.

I started attending LLL meetings when my ds turned a year old, feeling like
I was entering uncharted territory. About a year later I became accredited
as a Leader, which was over six years ago now. During my leadership I
answered online help forms for a few years, answered the LLLI hotline for a
couple of really intense weekends, and served a three-year term in the LLL
Leader Accreditation Department.

Part of the reason I decided to become a Leader was because I encountered so
many bf challenges myself and looked forward to helping other moms through
their own challenges. This spring I decided to move up to the next level of
helping moms and babies breastfeed, so I'm planning to take the IBCLC exam
next week. I've found the conversations on Lactnet so fascinating and look
forward to reading each one of them, hoping to absorb the wisdom and
experiences of all who have already been there, done that. I only wish I
would have subscribed sooner, but I'm browsing the archives every chance I
get.

I also wanted to add something to the discussion of the frightening
supplemental substances given to babies over the years. My mother was put
on a "diet" of skim cow's milk at age three months because her mother
thought she was getting too fat. When I was six weeks old my ped told my
mom to add vodka to my bottle since I wasn't yet sleeping through the night
and the cereal wasn't working - how's that for curling your hair?? Of
course I turned out perfectly normal anyway.<eye twitch, neck spasm>

Looking forward to more great bf conversations.
