I know a baby that died from herpes the first week of life.  He contracted
it via finger-feeding (hence, I never have anyone finger-feed anymore).  It
turns out that people can have these tiny white unnoticable bumps on their
fingers which are herpetic if cultured but really are very small and
harmless-feeling.  There is a name for them which escapes me right now, but I remember a
doctor at the time told me that they are seen in people who use their hands a lot
for a living and that did apply to the dad who was doing all the
finger-feeding---I think he was a musician.  Anyhow, a word to everyone out there:  be
careful with telling anyone to put their finger in their baby's mouth.  If I ever
recommend that a mom or dad gives the baby a finger to suck (which I rarely
do), I ALWAYS say first, "Have you ever let the baby suck on your finger?"  If
the answer is no, then I never recommend it.
