Gonneke,
Interesting! I do find differences in cultural
practices fascinating.

On a personal note, I BF'ed my two in side-lying
positions from the first day...my doula and several
wonderful recovery room nurses had to LOG ROLL me to
my side to nurse the eldest after her Cesarian birth,
as I still had no movement or sensation from about
navel down. It was funny, I was giggling as they
plopped me from side to side! With the second baby,
side lying kept pressure off my sore bottom (VBAC and
nearly a pound heavier than the first).

There were many reasons I had such an easy time with
the side lying position: eager, alert babies with
good-sized mouths (inherited from their father
<snort>), small breasts, small nipples and areolae,
not to mention a good knowlege base (suckling should
be mostly pain-free, nipple damage is not the norm,
etc.). Unfortunately, most of the moms I work with
have the opposite scenario and find the side lying
position tricky to use. I encourage it anyway, since
it is my personal favorite...as Claire continues to
nurse at 3.5 years old, and over 40 lbs., it would be
tough to hold her in my arms to nurse for as long as
she wants! I have to brace myself just to lift her!

Love those posts on cultural practices!! Keep 'em
coming...
Warmly, Carole
