Dear friends,

In my, I have to admit not so humble, opinion no one baby (especially the tiny and vulnerable ones) should have feedings so  far apart that there even are ''edges of hunger'' to be dealt with before normal feeding (=feeding at breast) can proceed.
By giving a very hungry baby artificial food first, than the message is that that is the stuff that stills hunger. If mom's milk at breast is not sufficient to satisfy then there could be offered something extra during breastfeeding at breast. If feeds are given at short intervals less milk is needed to satisfy and there might be less need to supplement.
Ofcourse this line of action expects mom and baby to be together 24/7.

Warmly,

Gonneke, IBCLC, LLLL, MOM in southern Netherlands

I may not have seen that thread; my understanding of this strategy, though,
is that one gives a minimal amount of supplement first, to "take the
edge'
off the baby's hunger and calm him. Then use the breast to actually
"feed"
the baby, so that over time the baby learns to associate satiety with the
breast. In other words, the breast is used as the "main course"
rather than
the "dessert". :-)
