Yes! the Near Term Infant is a challenge and unfortunately no one seems to
think they are a challenge because they are big.
OBs think they are big so no problem...Peds think that supplementation is
the great leveler.
Just send those 4 lbers out to the floor. Triple wrap them in blankets and
make sure the parents understand to feed them every 3 hours and if they don't
breastfeed well, then just give them a bottle...or send the Mom a pump and
let's watch her get even more frustrated because she pumps and thinks she
doesn't have enough milk.....
The Moms keep the rooms so cool that skin to skin gets to be a
challenge...60 degrees is often where the thermostats go and the nurses are so overworked
with 5 to 6 couplets that at night its easier to take them into to nursery
and bottle feed. It's a wonder I have hair left...from pulling it out.
Let's hear from the world some ideas and what after the hospital challenges
are from our practices in the hospital cause...maybe causation can help effect
change in how we treat and care for these no quite ready for primetime
babies.
