Dear Lactnet Friends:

Patronage has funded the arts for centuries; where would Michelangelo have
been without patrons? Or Mozart? Or Bach? Or any other of a number of
artists, musicians, and scientists. Add Hartmann and his fabulous team of
researchers to that illustrious list. No problem.

However, there is a conflict with a company that makes a video to mislead
and confuse mothers, and whose hidden mission is for breastmilk feeding,
instead of breastfeeding. If women all breastfed, pump companies wouldn't
exist. However, not all women can or will breastfeed; leading to a need for
safe alternatives. Industry is developing those safe alternatives; there is
a need to be filled.

My objection is that the alternatives are seen as equivalent, and that
marketing has changed mainstream practice. So many women are pumping and
bottle-feeding now that it has become a whole huge population that requires
study. Whereas pumping/bottle-feeding is vital for the NICU population, and
the mother separated from her baby for work or for school, it is not vital
for the population at large. I am sure that pump marketing, particularly a
company like Medela that has taken their marketing mainstream, is having an
impact, just as formula went mainstream with its marketing in the US in1981
to the detriment of breastfeeding.

Can the baby overfed human milk via bottle have an increased risk of
overweight? What of the impact on landfills and ecology with the waste
created by yet another industry that uses non-renewable resources and
creates more trash? What of the impact on parenting when a machine becomes
part of human relationship?

The fabulous research is paid for with the fabulous profits that have come
from breastmilk feeding, not breastfeeding. Something doesn't smell right
there.

Those are the things that bother me.....

warmly,
