The discussion about the mother on active duty who is to be 'deployed' for
three months makes me realize what a different world it is when children
have the right to be with their mothers. I just don't think many of my
acquaintances here would believe me if I tried to tell them that female US
military personnel may be deployed for extended periods of time when their
children are under 3 years old. (That's right, 3 YEARS, not months.) Most
Scandinavians would quite simply be unable to comprehend that it is possible
for the government of an industrialized nation - and our major military
ally - to send a breastfeeding mother of a young infant to another continent
without sending the infant along too.
We have a young woman as our minister of defense at the moment. She is
being seriously talked about in some circles as a possible candidate for
leader of NATO when the current leader completes his term. Maybe this would
be something she could take up - equal maternity rights for all female
military personnel in the entire alliance.
Sigh.
