Dear all with lactnet,
I'm seeing a mother with six sons, whose last baby born on 11th Oct. was
diagnosed with breastmilk jaundice. His highest SB level was 24 and his
mother was instructed to stop breastfeeding for 48 hours to bring the level
down. The level went down to 11 and she continued with her breastfeeding. 5
days later, the level went up to 18mg/dl and she was asked to stop
breastfeeding for another 48 hours. She came to me rather confused and
upset as she had successfully breastfed her last two sons for more than 2
years each. This time she sought a second opinion. Her present doctor
(known to be breastfeeding friendly) was concerned as her son's SB level has
gone up to 20mg/dl at 19 days of age. She has recommended that she
introduced a supplementary bottle of formula to keep the SB level down. It
has been difficult for this enthusiastic mother to hear so many voices.
Although I've given her Gartner's references and Newman's, the local doctors
here are rather conservative in their treatment of breastmilk jaundice. Any
comments?
