Pat,
I've found this to be true with babies born by vacuum extraction, too.
Some babies are so irritible, they can't lie on mom's chest because her
breathing moves them too much and it hurts to try to control their heads
and necks.

Side-lying, nothing touching them or their poor baby heads, makes them
comfortable enough to concentrate on their mouths.  I have no idea how
long it takes to resolve.  I refer to private LC's and hope they call if
they need help.
