Dr. Ballard was reviewing the Sosa study regarding bacterial counts in
breastmilk over a 120 hour period.  She posed the question about whether
keeping breastmilk fresh for longer the 48 hours (the current guide for their
own mother's milk given to a sick or preterm hospitalized baby- HUBANA) would
actually be a more conservative approach than freezing it.  Also b/c the
longer the milk is frozen, the less well absorped the fat is, may warrant
revisiting this topic.  Anyone have any published data more current than Sosa?
She also mentioned that an abstract had been presented at last year's Acad. of
b/f Medicine conference about a study conducted where the researchers
inocculated the milk with different pathogens and found that bacterial counts
decreased over time and were negative altogether by day 28 or 30.
I don't think this has been published yet and it is an in vitro not in vivo
situation.
