Dear Gayle:
What is mother's definition of constipation? As far as I know breast
babies are never constipated if they are totally breastfed. They may
(babies older than 4 weeks) only stool once a week or longer, but that
is not constipation. That is that breast milk has little "waste" (sorry
about the pun). My grandson only pooped once every 10 days and yes, he
was a little gassy a day or so before, but he was fine. The stools were
large and pasty. Not hard pellets. I think this mother should go back to
breastfeeding and watch the consistency of the stools and less the
frequency.

Subject: Constipation

I have mom's permission to pose this question to you
all. Have a baby, 37 weeker, now 3 weeks old. Mom has
been nursing and has supplimented from time to time.
Over the weekend, baby was constipated and fussy and mom assumed it was
her diet. They are Chinese and grandfather has been cooking for them.
All the traditional dishes, no MSG. Mom stopped nursing for two days
(pumped and dumped) and gave formula. Baby stooled 3-4 times a day.
Mom has started back to nursing this am so we have yet to see what the
effect will be on stooling. She made Grandfather cut down on the
spices. I talked to mom about making sure that baby nurses long enough
on breast to get to the fatter milk. Our question is, does anyone out
there know of anything in traditional Chinese cooking that could be the
culprit. Mom is convinced that it is something that she is eating.

Thanks
