Dear Lactnet Friends:

Someone asked me this question. I don't know the answer. I am hoping
someone here can either answer it or point me in the direction of someone
who can. Thank you all.

"The reason I was asking is because I thought breastfeeding women are
supposed to take a supplement of 150 mcg iodiine daily to ensure their
infant isn't iodine-deficient (that's what I have learned). So. . . if my
friend is iodine-deficient and cannot take an iodine supplement right now
(due to medications she is taking), should the breastfed infant receive an
iodine supplement? I though iodine is one of the nutrients where if the
breastfeeding mom is deficient, baby is at risk for deficiency. Am I
correct?"

warmly,
