I would, as a pp nurse who works frequently with addicted mothers, and
withdrawing babies, go by the guidelines you have used that are put forth
by those who know and have done the research. Giving a baby milk with
cocaine in it, if that is the case, is risky...I would consult the doctors
who work with these mothers and who are treating the baby for withdrawal.
Where we are, babies are put on methadone, not morphine. Weird. If the mom
is not treated for abuse, and is going to go back to using on discharge,
this could be a very dangerous situation for the baby, and DCF may be
involved. I would be very very careful on this one....I would consult th
rules as stated on the IBCLC pages, IBLCE, that is, and see if there is a
cause for bringing this situation to light with the PTB. We, as
professionals, must follow the guidelines for safety and wellbeing of all
our clients, especially the littlest ones.
